Hershey's Charity for Children: GOD slush Fund

Susan Brannon
21 Oct 2012

According to the Nation, Hershey started a trust fund for a children's school in Hershey, Pennsylvania designed to nurture and educate the children in need and it has done so for 1,800 children.  But there is another side to this story; they transfer some of the charity funds to the Pennsylvania Republicans, along with favors.

  • They purchased a failing golf course: a $12 million investment.  The investors turned their losses into a profit anywhere from $15,000 to $100,000 dollars by revamping the course, building a club house...from money donated by the Hershey charity fund.
  • It is known that many prominent local Republicans sit on the board of the fund, one is Zimmerman, former state attorney general and later to become the boards chair.  Briskly increased the salaries from from $35,000 to $100,000 and redesigned the charity to become a partisan fund.
  • The republicans made millions from the Hershey Trust; and collected over $500,000 annually according to the non-profit (non profit??really?)
  • James Neveles, a Bush a former feder chair of the Federal Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation made over $580,000
  • Tom Ridge, former Pennsylvania governor, pulled $200,000 annually
This is a non profit scandal if there ever was one.  The republicans who sit on the board are all civil leaders.  One can't ask for an investigation on how this non-profit is run.  Who in the state can oversee and investigate the standards?  The solution is if a Democrat wins at the polls this November.  The trust's need to be upheld and be run by their standards.

If the Hershey Company can do this as a non-profit, then what other non-profits shovel their funds around?

An exerpt of a student from the school:

"Even before my time, MHS’s mission had begun to shift away from the most desperate cases. Simultaneously, the charity’s assets, which had grown monumentally with the success of the various Hershey brands, started to be diverted from the school. One case in point was the 1963 construction of a medical school for Pennsylvania State University, which cost $50 million. Next came Founders Hall, a colossal administrative building constructed on MHS property in 1972 at a cost of another $50 million. It boasted the nation’s second-largest unsuspended dome (after the US Capitol) and draws 50,000 visitors annually. Republican Dick Thornburgh held his Pennsylvania gubernatorial inaugural celebration there in 1980, trumpeting how much money he’d saved taxpayers that day. Contributing to the savings, MHS children served as uncompensated waiters, parking lot attendants and the cleanup crew."

Romney profit from bailouts: hege fund pay days $12.9 billion from US taxpayers.

Mitt Romney/AP

Review of article From The Nation

"Once the hedge funders, including Singer—a deep-pocketed right-wing donor and activist who serves as chair of the conservative, anti-union Manhattan Institute—took control of the firm, they rid Delphi of every single one of its 25,200 unionized workers. Of the twenty-nine Delphi plants operating in the United States when the hedge funders began buying up control, only four remain, with not a single union production worker. Romney’s “job creators” did create jobs—in China, where Delphi now produces the parts used by GM and other major automakers here and abroad. Delphi is now incorporated overseas, leaving the company with 5,000 employees in the United States (versus almost 100,000 abroad)."

The Nation published an excellent article explaining how the auto industry bail out, the one that Romney blasts all the time during his campaign, has helped make him millions of dollars.  By using his wife Anns, blind trust that invested 1 million dollars into Singer's "vulture investment, " he and his wife, Ann, personally gained at least $15.3 million from the bailout."

The Romneys were invested with Elliott Management by the end of 2010, before a GM parts supplier, Delphy, was publicly traded.  The investment that Ann made could have been more than 1 million, because of the minimal disclosure required by law, does not make them tell how much they really invested in this vulture investment plan...before the automobile bailout plan had taken place.  Romney did not keep the holding in "his" name because if he had, he would have to reveal that he earned more than $50 million dollars...from our tax money in bailout and Stingers vulture investment plan.

Not only that, but the article says, that the bailout plan was to help save the 25, 200 unionized workers. Instead, due to the trading of the company into other hands and GM control holding GM by the hair as the sole supplier; the end result is that the 25, 200 union workers lost their jobs.  Out of 29 factories in the United States, only four remain in America leaving America with 5,000 employees and 100,000 working abroad in China.  Yes, Romney did create jobs...but not in America, but in China.

Ad's have been running blaming Obama for the pension disaster and those forced to retire early, earning minimal wages are interviewed on the television ads.  However, it was not Obama that is responsible for the pension disaster  that left 20,000 with a minimal pension plan.  It was Stinger and other hege funds that controlled Delphi.

The great American Election

This election is serious this time around while things are falling apart all around us and worldwide.  We need to be as informed as possible regarding those who are running, before we elect them to run our country.  Imagine 4 years of someone who is known to lie to the public even before they are elected; imagine what they will be able to lie to us about later.  Imagine the future condition of our country if someone who cannot be open and honest runs this country.

We are in a time where the rubber meets the road and every single person who can vote should go out and vote.  No excuses.  I understand that Obama has let us down in many ways, but we must remember what the state of our country was in when he came in and the known snowballing of the things that Bush had already put into action just before he left office.

In reality, things are actually simple but on a larger scale for the economy in America.  If a person looses their job and gets behind on their bills, it takes about 6 months for every month that they get behind to catch up.  This is an average.  Image this situation on a larger scale, the American economy:  to fix things it takes longer and it does not all fall into Obama's lap.  Get real on this.  Corporations have lost their social responsibility to the people of America by cutting health benefit costs in the billions by hiring more part time workers and less full time workers denying the worker any assistance in benefits.  We put less in the system because our income in lower and the corporations pay less into the system as well.

It is not our presidents alone that can solve this, it is also those who run the corporations.  Most of these corporations can afford to have full time workers, but chose not to because they can get away with it.  Most of these corporations deposit billions of dollars into foreign banks as a tax cut, because they can all at the Americans expense.

It is time for us to say "enough" and stand up boycott those corporations, no matter how much we "like" their services that they offer and walk away.  We need to walk away from the banks that took advantage of the American people promising them homes that they could not afford, robbing each and every one of us for this time and for our future.

It is where the money is, that hurts the corporations and don't fool yourselves.  They really don't care.  But we must care and take action to stand up and stop putting money in their pockets.

Research your leaders and vote, write letters, sign petitions, and write some more, make calls and move your money out of the companies that are known to rob the American people.
