San Francisco or Mumbai? UN envoy encounters homeless life in California

Leilani Farha was being given a walking tour in central San Francisco. Near a thronged artisanal grocery store and a food-truck park, she saw something under a freeway that gave her pause.

A young homeless man sat on the ground. He wore two pairs of jeans and had a hood pulled over his long brown hair. Before him was a crockpot filled with burning paper, over which he was heating tortillas in a dirty skillet. As cars, cyclists and tech commuter buses rushed past, white smoke poured into the darkening air.

“The last time I saw cooking on a sidewalk,” Farha said, “was in Mumbai.”

Farha, 49, is a Canadian lawyer. She is also the United Nations special rapporteur on adequate housing, charged with probing deplorable living conditions and assessing compliance with international human rights law. Her latest project is a report on “informal settlements” – shanties, favelas, tent cities – which will be presented at the UN general assembly.

In Mexico City, she spent time in a slum by a railway line. In Manila and Jakarta, she visited decrepit and makeshift houses. San Francisco has a median home value of $1.3m and would seem an incongruous next stop. Farha had come on an unofficial visit, at the invitation of academics and advocates. 

“The situation is unacceptable in light of the wealth of the country,” she said, adding that she was “deeply, deeply concerned” by the homelessness she saw.

Poverty in the US is an established UN focus; last month, another rapporteur was dismayed by visits to Skid Row in Los Angeles and hookworm-afflicted deep south communities. 

In 2011, a UN representative visited Sacramento. After discovering that homeless people were defecating into plastic bags, the official wrote to the city’s mayor. Such circumstances, she said, could amount to “cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment”.

Farha squatted by the man with the cooking fire. His name was Eric Hoch, and he was 30. 

The Minnesotan told her he had been homeless in San Francisco for two or three years. He complained of an old gunshot wound and said he did not understand the welfare system. He does not have a tent – he sleeps bundled in a blanket on the street.

“I’m going to ask kind of personal questions,” Farha said. “What do you do if you have to go the bathroom?”

Hoch described how he timed his bowel movements to the opening hours of restrooms in surrounding businesses.

“Did you know you have a right to housing?” she asked, referring to article 25 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. How would he react if the government offered him somewhere to live with no strings attached?

“That’d probably be something I’d hop, skip and jump to,” Hoch said.

“That’s something your government is supposed to do,” Farha said. “I hate to tell you, you’re being ripped off.” 

Homelessness is on the rise in the US for the first time since the great recession. In San Francisco, about 7,500 homeless people were counted last year, more than two-thirds suffering from health conditions including brain injuries and HIV/Aids. 

It would be easy to dismiss such extreme poverty as a product of human frailty. Ben Carson, secretary of housing and urban development, has described poverty as a “state of mind”. Farha takes a contrary view. 

“If I turned to San Francisco and there were 100 people who were homeless, I might say, ‘Hmm, this is probably about psychological disability, drug dependence, a history of sexual abuse in their childhood’ or something like that. I might be able to say that it is very individualized. 

“But when you’re seeing the numbers of people who are homeless here and in every other city, you just know it’s structural.”

There is almost nowhere in the US that is affordable for those earning minimum wage. The country is short about 7.5m homes for extremely low-income renters. In San Francisco, the waitlist to get into a homeless shelter is more than 1,000 names long. 

“In international human rights law,” Farha said, “providing shelter to people who are homeless is the absolute minimum standard for any country, regardless of resources.”

‘There’s a cruelty here’

The next day, in Oakland, she saw one kind of stopgap. In the shadow of several freeways, the city had installed a scattering of sheds, housing about 35 people on a bare patch of gravel. The sheds do not come with electricity, plumbing or insulation. Each has one small window. 

Such “tiny homes” are increasingly used in western cities when permanent housing is unavailable. Experts fear they could pave the way for American shantytowns. 

Farha was led inside a shed inhabited by Robyin Clark, who described herself as the camp “mom”. She has been homeless, she said, off and on since the age of 12. The city had supplied a camp bed and three storage boxes. At night it was “like an iced freezer”, Clark said. Her daughter, Kimmie Sanchez, said she was grateful for the respite.

The alternative was evident a mile or two away, in a string of shacks built from discarded materials. Farha picked her way through one, an immense, rickety warren of tarps and wood, the floor sodden and covered with broken glass. The inhabitant, Mavin Carter-Griffin, told Farha she sometimes felt she had created a Burning Man-style art project. Other times, it felt like a trap.

“There’s this abject humiliation and embarrassment,” she said. “I’m astounded that my life is here.”

Outside, there was a portable toilet serving dozens of people. It was overflowing, said a member of Farha’s team who used it.

Farha was struck by the stories she heard of homeless people losing their few possessions in encampment sweeps, and laws that criminalize sitting on sidewalks or food sharing. “There’s a cruelty here that I don’t think I’ve seen,” she said. 

Next she was heading to Los Angeles, where thousands live in conditions that do not meet standards set for refugee camps.

“I’m slightly terrified to go to LA,” Farha said, “because everyone says LA is even worse.”

‘Unexpected’ source of radioactivity from Fukushima disaster found – study

Six years on, consequences of the disaster at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant continue to uncover. Scientists say they’ve found new and “unexpected” source of radioactive material dozens of kilometers away from the site.

New radioactivity has been discovered in salty groundwater and sands beneath beaches up to 100km away from the disaster site, according to the findings published in ‘Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences’ journal on Monday.

Researchers from Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) in the US and Japan’s Kanazawa University revealed high levels of persistent cesium-137 in eight beaches, sampled for the study between 2013 and 2016.

These levels turned out to be up to 10 times higher than levels in seawater of the power plant harbor, according to the press release on the WHOI website.

“No one expected that the highest levels of cesium in ocean water today would be found not in the harbor of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant, but in the groundwater many miles away below the beach sands,” one of the researchers, Virginie Sanial, said.

The radioactive element the scientists suggest traveled from the crippled plant with ocean currents days and weeks after the reactor meltdowns. The sand grains have been storing it for years, slowly emitting cesium into ocean.

The radioactive content could be originating from the 2011 disaster or nuclear weapons tests in the 1950s-60s. However, the research team also found another form of cesium which can only be Fukushima-derived.

“Only time will slowly remove the cesium from the sands as it naturally decays away and is washed out by seawater,” Sanial said.

Despite the study showing that cesium doesn’t pose a risk to public health, the research still warns of such unsuspected pathway and storage of contamination, which should be considered in nuclear power plant monitoring.

“There are 440 operational nuclear reactors in the world, with approximately one-half situated along the coastline,” the study reads.

In March 2016, an 8.9 magnitude earthquake struck northeastern Japan, triggering a tsunami that caused meltdowns at three reactors of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant. 

The disaster forced some 160,000 people to flee their homes and left more than 18,000 dead, becoming the worst since the 1986 Chernobyl catastrophe.

Mysterious spike in radioactive particles across Europe baffles scientists

Germany’s Office for Radiation Protection reported increased radioactivity in parts of central and western Europe over the past week. The heightened levels were detected at several trace measuring stations in Europe, and at six locations in Germany.

The particles are ruthenium-106, an isotope used in radiotherapy for eye tumors, and at times in radioisotope thermoelectric generators (RTGs) which provide power to satellites. An increase of ruthenium-106 has been detected in the air in Austria, France, Germany, Italy and Switzerland.

While officials say there is no need to panic, they don’t know where the material has come from. The elevated radiation levels do not present a threat to human health.

“New analyses of the source of the radioactive material are likely to indicate a release in the southern Ural,” the Office for Radiation Protection said, “but other regions in Southern Russia can not be excluded.”

It said that because only ruthenium-106 has been detected, a nuclear power plant accident can be ruled out.

The Russian state atomic energy corporation Rosatom, however, rejected the report, saying that “the radiation situation around all Russian nuclear facilities is within the norm and corresponds to natural background radiation.”

The Wednesday statement also noted the data of Roshydromet ,Russia’s meteorology service, indicated that ruthenium-106 hasn’t been detected on Russian territory, only excluding St. Petersburg, from September 25 to October 7. However, the ruthenium-106 concentration in St. Petersburg last week was “insignificant,” and was four times lower than the allowed level, it added.

Russian nuclear facilities cannot be seen as the source of the reported release, Rosatom said, calling the speculation about a Russian origin “invalid.”

Similar spikes in radioactive particles have occurred across Europe in the past, but they are rare.

In February, trace amounts of radioactive iodine-131 were detected across parts of Europe. The iodine faded, and the source of the radioactivity wasn’t identified, Motherboard reports.

France’s IRSN institute announced the trace amounts were detected over Norway, Finland, Poland, Germany, Czech Republic, France and Spain.

A network run by American-Hungarian financier George Soros has vast influence over EU bodies in Brussels and nurtures the creation of a “Europe of mixed population” by encouraging immigration, Hungary’s Prime Minister has argued.

Speaking to Radio Kossuth Friday, Viktor Orban launched yet another verbal attack on George Soros, calling him a ‘political puppet master’ having vast influence over EU’s top institutions.

Soros’ people have infiltrated the European Parliament and other bodies of the 28-member bloc, Orban claimed, seeking to create “a Europe of mixed population” and have Budapest “condemned and forced to change its migration policy.”

More than 200 members of European Parliament have been listed by Soros’ “empire” as “friends to the network,” Orban went on. “There are quite a few of them in the Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs Committee [LIBE], including Hungarians,” he said.

Orban, who will seek a fourth term as Hungary’s Prime Minister next year, said he has directed the country’s secret services to investigate the “Soros empire” and “to expose it to the public.”

“By employing the national security services, the Soros network that strives to influence European life should be exposed,” Orban said. “Who are these Hungarians who are participating in this process from here, within Hungary?” he asked.

Orban, has previously accused the billionaire financier of conspiring in Brussels to create “a new, mixed, Muslimized Europe.” He consistently argued that Soros has more influence in Brussels than in Washington or Tel Aviv.

The Prime Minister and the billionaire have clashed in the past, most prominently over the Soros-funded Central European University (CEU) in Budapest. In June, Soros labelled Hungary a “Mafia state,” while Orban described the comments as “a declaration of war.”

”The only network which operates in mafia ways, which is not transparent in Hungary is the Soros network," Orban said. 

The simmering spat is coupled with the Hungarian government’s crackdown on Soros-backed NGOs. Earlier this year, Orban announced Soros’ charities will be “swept out” of Hungary. Now, it is obligatory for all non-government groups sponsored from abroad to disclose the identity of significant foreign donors.

Las Vegas Shooting Aftermath Image

You can see that the lights are on and there are bodies just laying out there unattended and all alone.  I am not saying that these are not people who were killed however, if someone in my group was shot and laying on the ground, you bet I would be next to them to ensure proper care.  I would also hope that my friends or family would do the same thing for me.  I can include the fact that it is possible that these people ran away to feel safer.  Yet, this image was taken clearly way after the shooting had stopped.  In that case, I find it strange that the people did not start going back to be near those that were shot.  There is absolutely not a soul standing around out in that field.  There are only a few near the fence, with what "seems" like they are attending someone that is injured.  There are no police, there are not any firemen, EMT's....nada.

To me, this is both strange and very sad.  To be left alone in a field like that totally ignored and forgotten.  It is impossible to know by standing a distance if any of those people may still alive, but cannot move because of their injuries.  Why were there not more people assisting? Something is not right.

If this is the world we live in then we are in deep trouble.  After a horrible situation as this, I would have thought that the entire city would have come out to assist once the shooting had stopped.  It reminds me of people just walking over bodies laying on the sidewalk and not stopping to ensure that they are okay.  This has happened several times and it took hours to find out that someone had died from a heart attack or stroke.  People just step over the bodies stereotyping one thing or another, not wanting to lend a helping had.  This image makes me very sad.

This is a great and very long documentary on certain aspects of world history.  Grab some popcorn on a cold rainy evening.  It is worth the watch.  This is a good time to look at this considering the new release of the JFK investigation papers and the recent mass shooting in Las Vegas.

This documentary points out the scenes behind the scenes and corporate historical events involved in WWI, WWI, the Vietnam War, The Iraq War and who gets the money.  It draws a clear and precise description of a proven trail to some of the most powerful people in the world.  People say, "Oh! Conspiracy" and shrove their shoulders, laugh and mock those who actually read all the documents, the hundred pages of them.

The truth is hard to swallow and imagine if it is difficult for me considering my reporting background, I can imagine how difficult it would be for those who simply live their lives without having the time to research information for themselves.

There are many lies out there called propaganda and propaganda has been a major player in our world  since the 1930's and beyond.
Please take your time to watch this, you can always stop it here and there and go back to your You Tube history and pick up where you left off.  It will change how you view your world.

Conventional dairy, which relies on Monsanto’s Roundup Ready GMO crops, is poisoning Vermont’s water, degrading Vermont’s soil and contributing to global warming.  And yes, glyphosate was found in Ben & Jerry's ice cream.  What is glyphosate?  

Well, Glyphosate is a broad-spectrum systemic herbicide and crop desiccant. It is an organophosphorus compound, specifically a phosphonate. It is used to kill weeds, especially annual broadleaf weeds and grasses that compete with crops. It was discovered to be an herbicide by Monsanto chemist John E.  

Previous research has shown that Roundup is toxic to human DNA even when diluted to concentrations 450-fold lower than used in agricultural applications

“Inactive” ingredients such as solvents, preservatives, and surfactants contribute to toxicity in a synergistic manner, and ethoxylated adjuvants in glyphosate-based herbicides have been found to be “active principles of human cell toxicity”

Cell damage and even cell death can occur at the residual levels found on Roundup-treated food crops, as well as lawns and gardens where Roundup is applied for weed control

Liver, embryonic and placental cell lines are adversely affected by glyphosate at doses as low as 1 ppm. GM corn can contain as much as 13 ppm of glyphosate, and Americans eat an average of 193 lbs of GM foods annually.

The Organic Consumers Association (OCA) found glyphosate, the main ingredient in weedkillers like Roundup, in 10 out of 11 samples of the company's ice cream flavors, the New York Times reported on Tuesday.

While the levels of glyphosate were well below the legal limit set by the Environmental Protection Agency, the Organic Consumers Association argues that any presence of the pesticide product is misleading and potentially dangerous. 

"It's time for Ben & Jerry’s to announce it will immediately begin transitioning to 100-percent organic," using zero pesticides in production, the OCA said in a post on its website. "Otherwise conscious consumers have no choice but to launch a national and, if necessary, international protest campaign and boycott."

The OCA has called for Ben & Jerry's to stop labeling its ice creams as "natural" because the brand's dairy cows consume genetically-engineered corn (the brand told the Times that it is working to find all-natural alternatives). Add-ins, such as peanut butter or cookie dough, containing ingredients that have been sprayed with the weedkiller may also be the source of the glyphosate in the ice creams, according to the Times. 

A Ben & Jerry's spokesperson said in a statement that the brand had not yet seen the results of the test, but could confirm that all ice cream flavors are safe to consume.  

"Even if the reported results are accurate, as the laboratory that conducted the test stated, a person would have to consume 145,000 eight-ounce servings PER DAY to reach the limit set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)," the spokesperson said. 

The question of if glyphosate is dangerous to consume is still hotly debated. While the World Health Organization said in 2015 that the weed killer was "probably carcinogenic," Reuters reported in June that scientific data may not fully back that claim. 

Despite the continued debate, many customers simply do not want to have a herbicide ingredient in their food. Soon after the Times published its article on the OCA's ice cream test, the brand began receiving complaints and boycott threats on social media.

Raw Footage. FBI Op. Rescued 84 from Human Trafficking Arresting 120!

Nationwide 120 people were arrested for child human trafficking with a total of 84 children rescued.
The youngest was 3 months and the oldest was 15.  The FBI conducts an annual law enforcement action program focused on recovering underage victims of prostitution and trafficking dubbed "Cross Country"  In October 2017 the operation involved 58 FBI field offices as well as hundreds of local and state law enforcement agencies in an investigation that took place in hotels, casinos, truck stops, street corners and online, the FBI said. Authorities from Canada, Britain, Thailand, Cambodia and the Philippines also were involved.

I would like to point out a few concerns:
1)  Operation "Cross country" is only a four day out of a 365 day year law enforcement program.
2)  120 is a high number and one cannot imagine what the numbers would be if they did this all year long.  They do not stop investigations, but this particular operation is only four days.
3)  Because this is a known annual operation, the main traffickers would know this and keep a low profile during this time.  Are the people who are getting arrested the offenders who were not aware of the operation taking off, shall I say amateurs in the human trafficking scene?

The 3-month-old girl and her 5-year-old sister were rescued in Denver after a friend of their family had offered to sell the two children for $600, the FBI said in a statement. Florida Sex Sting Leads to 277 Arrests

I started reading about the 120 national arrests made on child trafficking nationwide for the past few weeks.  It has been a bit difficult to find other than the copy and pasted articles in the news that all say the same thing.

As a citizen of the USA, I would like to know where these people were located, what are their names are any of them my doctor?  Yes, doctors, teachers and other's with what one would think is a prominent or trusted career are among those who have been arrested.  I started to search for names and locations.  This is the first of what I have found with names.

Gunshot Wound To The Leg Surgery At Shock Trauma and #Campos

So just to remind you, I was at war...working in conflict zones, as a photographer.  I've seen it all.  Looking at the videos, something does not seem right.  So, here is my take:  there were crisis actors (yes, they are used) and...remind you...and..real shooters.  I posted this video to show you the actual trauma from getting shot in the leg.  Campos, the security guard was shot in the leg.  remember?  First after the shooting in Las Vegas and second, before the shooting in Las Vegas by six minutes.



When Campos was shot in the leg (by 200 bullets...mind you) he waited a few days (?) to get treated.  Really? One bullet can cause a ton of loss of blood, to the point of passing out and becoming life threatening within 10 minutes.  Within days, he received a hero's award and a week later disappeared, then re appeared and was interviewed on the Ellen show..and exclusive one time only...for ever...interview.  yep.  He gained around 35 to 40 pounds after the award and was walking fine, skin tone healthy and must have bought contact lenses.  Sitting next to Campos was his "friend" the engineer, who was shot in the back.  They are both sitting upright, talking, looking calm and without any pain.  Ellen, near the end of her interview remembered to pull out the tissue as a for though to offer to Campos because remember he is traumatized and will never again do another interview to the public.  He needs to heal.  He looked fine and Ellen tapped him to take the tissue, he followed along.

Mainstream Media, interviewed a few people in the hospital a few days after being shot.  Their skin color was also glowing, smiles without any emergency medical equipment in the room...yep.  actors?  They are dubbing you.  Real gunshot wounds are not easy to repair, the bullet shatters upon impact.  The pieces spread throughout the area and normally several surgeries are required to remove all the pieces.  Most of the time, infection breaks out from the hospital and surgery which complicates the issue even more.  Normally, when over 500 people are injured, a few more will die.  None did, the death toll remained the same.



So, this is a video of a gunshot wound in the leg..  Remember the videos that are online, does anyone look like they have been shot?  I know what some were shot and some were killed..however, something seems wrong with main "actors".   It was a mix, actors and real shooters.  Paddox was a patsy, I firmly believe, the images show plantings of the guns in the room neatly placed inside so when the photographer would take an image of the door...the gun would be there.  Paddox's gun was above his head you know, the one that he killed himself with.  Since when does someones arms fly upwards after shooting themselves in the mouth?  Everything drops, like gravity the gun would be near his body.  And the gun located over his right foot?  How can someone shoot themselves and fall down dead and later put a gun over the foot?



In the end, it is obvious that we will never know the truth and the reality of this horrible shooting.  People were traumatized no doubt, people were killed no doubt but who did it and why?  I think that story goes deeper than we can imagine....more to come...

I've been doing this for a very long time (15 years?) and have never seen anything like this.  I do not make any money from this, for it is a "post war journalism" outlet for me and the importance to share with other the things that I research and discover.  It is not all for myself, but for public integrity, truth and reality, sticking up for our nation, the people, our water, our food and more.  Propaganda has been evident for a very long time, I know since the 1930's it is not new.  We just need to keep providing information as much as we can to counter the propaganda that is in our faces on a daily basis.

I would rather know the facts and the reality in events.  Wouldn't you want to understand what really happened for horrible crimes such as the Las Vegas shooting?  If we know what really happened, then we will know how to help for it NOT to happen again.  However, it has become evident to myself, that money is what talks, money is what makes our laws, money is what has the power and lives really do not matter it seems.  This is not new of course, this too has been going on for a long time.  But most of us were not alive in the 30's, so we must continue to educate others so we can all wake up and not slumber allowing our lives and rights to slowly drift away.  (That's my venting for the day!)

Raw Footage Shooting Las Vegas People at Bus Stop Below Shooter

this entire video is strange:  1st there has already been shooting in Vegas to the concert:  These people are filming in the middle of the shooting and the police are already driving around.  1) at 1:48 the girl talks about how she can see the glass falling from the hotel (the shooting has already been going on...) 2) they are smiling and making jokes 3) The bus was allowed to drive on the street to drop and pick people up. 4) there are two "last single shots" a person cannot kill themselves with two shots in the mouth.  5) they say they saw the muzzle flashes.  6) no video so far, shows any flashes or broken windows during the shooting...zooming, slowing down, etc..



Something is not right here.  Notice that they know the script:  glass falling; shooting at the event; sounds like firecrackers; shooting from upper part of the hotel.  one guy is standing and filming in the middle of the shooting without a concern at all.



I think that Paddock did not do the shooting; I think that it is highly possible they had crisis actors (like maybe these guys) running around in the middle of a true event, that went wrong to confuse people even more.  I know that people were actually shot and killed and this is what makes the entire thing really sad.  We don't trust what the authorities are telling us because it does not make sense.



The security guard was shot 6 minutes before the shooting, so they say and yet when you listen to the police dispatch reports, it is not clear where the shooting came from/is coming from they are still trying to locate the position...yet the security guard was shot before the shooting with 200 rounds?



If you listen carefully to the shots in this video, you can hear shooting closer to where they are and then a pause and shooting that is farther away.  Anyway.  I don't trust this official report from the FBI and others.  I am worried that there is a cover up.



Maybe these "actors" really thought that it was all fake and this is why they are not scared.  They thought they were playing a situational stage and did not realize that it was real.

PASSPORT COMING FROM THE TRUCK REALLY ?

The following video shows a great clip with "new" passports being thrown on the ground after the MH17 crash.  I'm putting this out there to observe how scenes could be staged.  I am not saying that no one died in this place crash, the point is to understand the difference between reality and non reality and to use logic, think, consider the stories and perceptions that mainstream or our government provides for the citizens.  These passports coming from a truck and then being thrown on the ground looks odd.  In a plane crash, I would think that the passports would be at least singed?   It reminds me of the crisp and accommodating passports they found after 9-11 plane crash into the World Trade Center.

Not only are we having problems with hurricanes in America, but Asia has had its share of flooding followed with malaria infecting 13,000 people and 1,400 deaths. In addition, Burma is experiencing an exodus into Bangladesh due to the recent conflict. But wait! That's not all! The UN Refugee Agency's annual Global Trends study found that 65.6 million people were forcibly displaced worldwide at the end of 2016. We are currently having a huge human population migration worldwide.  This number continues to increase in 2017 and does not include the newly displaced 500,000 Siri Lankans due to the recent flooding. 

There are not any nations that have that kind of money to disperse for those who are suffering worldwide.  However, there is enough money in the hands of the wealthy elite who can either choose to help make things right or not.  Literally, it is in their hands.  Think about it.

This video show short clips of interviews with European immigrants.  It provides some interesting realities and insight.  We all need work, even those of us who live in the developing world.



So what is new?  The problem is that we, the citizens do not understand what benefits the immigrants receive from our governments using our tax money. It seems a bit hush hush in msm (mainstream media) in providing that type of information to its citizens who struggle to own or rent homes to live in and/or those who struggle to find livable wage jobs.



Most of the immigrants come from countries where there are few jobs and many are going hungry and struggling just as many of us are now struggling.  Some have hopes to have a good life and others do not care about working at all.
